The Republic of Ireland
donated to the United Nations a bronze sculpture commemorating the flight of
millions from the Great Hunger. “Arrival” was commissioned to honor those who
survived the Atlantic crossing to become part of the cultural fabric of New
York, and of America.
EKLA designed the installation according to the specifications of Ireland’s
chief architect, basing the construction details only on progress photographs
of the sculpture’s fabrication. A stainless steel rail and granite path encircle
the sculpture, oriented to face east to Ireland, overlooking the East River
from the terrace of United Nations Park.
